Lady Warriors Varsity
Volleyball
Playing Above the Net
by Alisa Walsh
Though it may not seem like
it to a casual observer, volleyball is a very intense and strenuous
sport. Alex Bear sumarized the sport in this, “People don’t
understand how hard volleyball is. We have to put on our socks,
lace up our shoes, pull on our jerseys, put a ribbon in our hair,
and slip on our spandex. It’s not easy to get ready for
a volleyball game, let alone play in one.” With all the
setting, jumping, and spiking, it is very easy to roll an ankle,
pull a hamstring, or twist a knee; all of which the Warrior’s
varsity volleyball team has done this season. Through the struggles,
the girls maintained positive attitudes and supported one another,
no matter how tough the competition.
With a team made up entirely of juniors with one exception to
senior Jenny Check, the girls are forced to be strong and play
their best. They recently placed seventh out of thirty-two teams
in a tournament, and beat Sacred Heart Prep and Fremont, placing
them with now 14 wins in the season. Although their league record
reflects the talent that the girls possess as a team, it can’t
fully display the talent that each individual on the team has.
Reviewing the scores of each match, however, would show much more.
Losing each game by merely one or two points, the Warriors continue
to compete in the race for CCS qualifications, and it looks as
though they may be ready to compete in the fiercer competition
in CCS.
The girls on varsity volleyball have bonded not only as a team
but as friends as well; as with any sport, lasting relationships
have been formed throughout the past few months. Looking back
upon the season, Check stated, “I’ve had a great year
so far. There have been so many memories. Our coaches are really
dedicated and give great advice when needed.” Even the manager
of the volleyball team, junior David Zvolanek has partaken in
the team’s energy and when asked for a quote about the team
simply said, “Go team!” Overall, the girls’
volleyball team has had their share of struggles, but they have
come out, in the end, stronger as a result.
