JV Girls Water Polo
by Alexandra Farrokhian
The 2004 JV girls water polo
team is standing their ground in the West Catholic League, building
up some of the league’s strongest players.
Though they are in the midst of a losing season with a record
of 1-4, a visit to one of the games reveals a different story.
These Lady Warriors truly live up to their namesake. Their play
revealed a level of heart and commitment that would make any player
or coach proud. Their first league game for example was a close
loss to Presentation 5-4, and instead of being disheartened; they
went on to a solid win against Notre Dame 9-6.
Their next game against Archbishop Mitty, a formidable rival ended
in a less pleasing 3-7 loss. However, the culmination of their
first three games resulted in sophomore Mimi Santiesteban being
placed as the leading scorer in the West Cal with a total of eight
goals. Sophomore Karissa Ajlouny also made the top twenty list
at the number nine spot with 3 goals along with freshman Katie
Allen, in at seventeen with 2 goals.
Their next game against Sacred Heart Prep was also difficult as
the school has one of the leading aquatic departments. But the
ladies treaded water with the best of them, fighting hard but
ending in an 11-4 loss. The St. Francis team also posed a challenge
for the Warriors and despite their best efforts the game ended
in a 14-0 loss. However these scores did not keep the team down
Santiesteban commented that the team is, “Motivated and
very unified with a super work ethic.”
