VC Football Stays Number One, Undefeated After
Last-Second Hail Mary
by Heather Heise
Valley Christian faced Mitty
for Homecoming on October 11. In the first quarter the Warriors
were down 3 - 0, but after receiving some motivation from Coach
Mike Machado during half time, VC was able to make a come back.
In the third quarter, junior Josh Isias recovered a fumble by
Mitty which gave the Warriors hope. VC capitalized on the turnover,
marching 67 yards in 10 plays. The offense continued to move as
senior running back, Kevin Gallardo lined up with fourth- and
- two and produced a 3 yard rush up the middle. Then with 1:56
left in the game, junior Tim Najar ran the ball back for a 46-
yard touchdown to end the game.
On October 29, Valley Christian
faced Serra at home for what seems to many to be the most exciting
high school football game ever witnessed.
In the first quarter Valley was down 8 - 6 only to continue to
struggle. Senior Colin Maher would return the opening kick off
of the second quarter for a 69 - yard touchdown return. The Warriors
then took the lead on a 27-yard pass from Dante Perez to Maher
which would bring VC ahead. But not for long; Serra would come
back and score making it 32 - 27 with just around 2 minuets left
in the game.
Then with 12 seconds left
on the clock VC received the kick off. Maher would receive the
ball and run for 15 yards. With little hope left and only 4. 6
seconds on the clock Perez threw a Hail Mary for one last attempt.
When none other then Maher would be there to receive the pass
for 68 yards and run the ball in for a touchdown with no time
left on the clock. Valley Christian won 34 - 32. VC faces Bellermine
on November 6 at VC and then St. Francis at 7:30 for the last
league game of the season.
