The off-season is often a time of rest, but not for the West Catholic Athletic League, with several of its high school baseball teams participating in a wood bat league.
A head start on this year’s season is always beneficial, but even better is seeing the competition early. “It was a good experience and it gave us a good look at this year’s upcoming competition,” said junior pitcher Anthony Kupbens.
Advantages of using a wood bat from the hitter’s perspective are the batter can recognize the flaws in a swing, due to the lack of power in a wood bat, but its also breakable. Junior Ryan Walters said, “It’s always fun to pitch against wood bats. Balls don’t go as far, and breaking them as a pitcher is always fun.”
In the wood bat league, hitters are forced to become more precise with their swing in order to hit the ball hard. This hasn’t slowed up Warriors hitting at all. “[It has] robbed us of hits, made us frustrated, but strengthened us,” said senior Josiah Rodriguez.
The team has profited from plenty of team unity, and the freshmen are becoming more acclimated with the competition of high school baseball.
