On Friday, October 13 all of the mentors and freshmen gathered in the small gym to have a pre-game bash for the JV and Varsity games against Serra. The lead mentors, equipped with their paint brushes and Warrior spirit welcomed the freshmen to an exciting afternoon filled with dodgeball, piñatas, and ice cream. All of the lead mentors worked diligently to prepare for the event, and by the freshmen’s reactions, it was a complete success.
There were many different activities that the freshmen could engage in, from Warrior face-painting to hitting “Sarah” piñatas. For those freshmen with frisky feet, a Dance Dance Revolution game was set up to show off their dance moves. The freshmen were also able to take part in a competitive game of dodgeball where they hit boys dressed up as girls or “Sarahs.” All the freshmen who arrived mingled with their friends and shared in the opportunity to reconnect with their mentors.
Aaron Grayson, a lead mentor who helped plan out the event stated, “I’m glad the pre-game bash went well. It was a great way for the freshmen and mentors to bond in mocking the Serra Padres.” And from the looks of things, this spirited event was only the beginning of the many activities the mentors have in store.
In the earlier portion of October, the mentors met with their connection groups, and the discussion topic was on friendship. For many students, even those who are not freshmen, the effects of peer pressure are easily felt among a group of peers. The mentors demonstrated the effects of negative peer pressure in a way that many of the freshmen will never forget. First a pre-selected freshman was sent outside of the classroom.
Then the lead mentors gave the classroom instruction to be completely silent when the freshmen re-entered. As the freshman entered, they were immediately struck with the horror that all eyes were on them. With no opportunity to run or hide, the freshman had to face the classroom humiliation. Through this game the mentors were able to show freshmen how peer pressure can be negative, and you never want your friend to put that kind of pressure on you.
Overall the meetings the mentors had with their freshmen have been both a learning experience as well as a joyous occasion. The next meeting for freshmen mentoring will be on 11/9 and 11/10.
