Kicking off the season strong, the junior varsity football team ended their non-league schedule and began their much anticipated league games. Keeping hold of their high rank in the Bay Area, Warrior football for junior varsity shut out their first two league games winning against Riordan 48-6 and Saint Ignatius 13-3. During the Riordan game sophomores Ryan Jones and Steven Navarez kept the other team from scoring with two forty-yard interceptions. Both defense and offense played to their best abilities and their hard work paid off. “The offensive line really did their part and without them I probably wouldn’t have scored,” stated sophomore Anthony Oliveras who scored two touchdowns for the junior varsity team. The defensive coach, Doug Canepa was proud of his hard working team and the dedication they have to play their best.
Their game against Saint Ignatius on October 7 was hard fought. Defense blocked Saint Ignatius’ 8 plays on the one-yard line, denying them the touchdown. On Friday, October 13, their luck fell short as Serra won the intense battle for the win against the Warriors. Defense suffered many injuries but never gave up. Sophomore Jordan Smallwood said, “Even though the score said they won, I thought we did good, because we stepped up our intensity in the 2nd half, and even though it was a disappointing loss, we still worked together as a team. We were rewarded something better than a win and that is team togetherness.” On October 20, the Warrior team played the Bellarmine Bells. Sadly, with all their hard work and determination, the junior varsity team lost.
