In a game of switching roles and encouraging school spirit, Powder Puff football allows some entertainment before homecoming night. In a two game round robin tournament, this lasting Valley Christian tradition is loved by students and faculty. The winner has bragging rights over the defeated for the next year.
Much hard work and effort was put into the preparation for the Powder Puff Football Season. Coaches had their teams practicing rigorously for Friday’s big games. Senior coach Mike Giancola explained, “We had to build on our natural talent so we worked hard in the weight room before and after school, had a handful of Bible studies, team dinners, and had donuts in the morning waiting for the girls. This year our senior girls were in the best shape mentally, physically and spiritually.” It seems all their hard work paid off; in the first round the seniors had a crushing defeat over the freshmen 35-7. Referee Mike Scialabba commented on this year’s freshmen team, “This year we had the best freshmen squad I have seen since I have been a part of Powder Puff football. Their running back (Jenna Davis) did a great job running the ball.”
In the juniors vs. sophomores game the score was tied at the end of the fourth quarter, bringing the game into sudden death overtime, where the sophomores came out victorious 14-7 over the juniors. The victors advanced onto the night rally, where the seniors faced off against the sophomores. It was a well-played game by both sides, but in the end the seniors came out on top 14-7 over the sophomores.
Senior Chris Faulkner commented on the win over the sophomores, “ This year’s team was so raw (like the Bears). Basically the best team I’ve gotten the chance to coach, actually this is the only team I’ve gotten a chance to coach. I’m happy we were able to be victorious even though our offense’s strategy was lacking.” The seniors came out victorious marking another successful Powder Puff season at Valley Christian.
