Spotlight Athlete: Water Polo Gunslinger Matthew Smith
by Adam Hill

Lefties have an extreme advantage when it comes to scoring goals with their legs treading water and arms getting the glory. Matt Smith had led the school’s varsity water polo team for his fourth year.

“I have watched him improve his knowledge of the game and understanding of the flow,” stated head coach Caleb Carlson.

Smith had a team-leading 44 goals in his few 15 games so far this season. He’s been a great help to this year’s team, including his great game-winning goal against St. Ignatius in sudden death overtime. Smith also leads his team in assists.

Along with the rest of the team, he’s very dedicated to his practices and outside training. Pushing himself to higher potentials, Smith is a never satisfied with his achievements and playing abilities.

Always helping others and correcting them, he tends to his teammates as captain. Smith is a great role model for the team and younger students. Outside of the water, he has an outstanding GPA where he aids other students with tutoring in math.
