Boys JV & Frosh Water Polo Begin
Experienced team looks to improve
by Ryan Eshoff & Selena Ma

With a year of experience under their belts, Valley Christian’s boys junior varsity water polo squad hopes to continue to make their name known among the perennial powers of the West Catholic Athletic League.
“We feel that our team is much improved this year, and should win a few more games. That isn’t to say we still do not have a lot of work to do,” states Tyler Gallau, one of the two sophomore captains. Because of the young team last year, the squad features a wealth of returning players. “Since most of the J.V. players last year were freshman, nearly everyone is returning, which is building chemistry,” remarks sophomore Ryan Stephenson. Under the tutelage of first-year coach Bill Gerdts, the players look forward to a fast start in the WCAL.
After an up-and-down ride in the Valley Christian tournament, the team enjoyed remarkable success in the Leland teams. Overcoming teams such as Piedmont Hills and Pioneer, Valley faced off with Hollister in the final. Facing an early deficit, the Warriors mounted a tough comeback but still came up just short, ensuring a superb second-place finish. With luck, this momentum will carry over against the WCAL’s toughest.
To kick off the 2005 year, the freshmen boys water polo team matched up against many difficult teams such as Serra and Archbishop Mitty. Playing in the WCAL is no easy task for these boys. They have yet to win, but it is still early in their season. They still have four more league games, unluckily for them, they are not allowed to go to the CCS play-offs, unless they are chosen to move up to the Varsity team.
These water polo warriors put up a tough fight and do so with a Christ-like spirit. They prove themselves worthy of the name Warriors by giving their very best everyday during practice and playing with vigor and heart during the games. Senior Andrew Kikuta said, “I am excited for the upcoming years for the freshmen boys. They have big shoes to fill once we are gone.” The boys play with a lot of heart and they do not give up without a fight.

Shakespeare, Where Art Thou?
For some people, spending eight hours on a bus seems like some new type of torture. Everyone going on the 11th Annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival trip, though, saw things a little differently.
Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.

Two '100 Year' Storms Devastate Gulf Coast
Two monster storms, aptly called 100 year storms, savaged the Gulf Coast last month. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita swept in from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As winds began to blow, reporters gave horrific forecasts of what was to come. Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 (intensity level out of 5), devastated much of the United States along the Gulf Coast.

Warriors of the Waves
The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. All this work helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year's team captains.
