Cross Country: Conquering Mountains
by Sarah Contreras

What is cross country all about? Just like it says... running, but not on a track; on golf courses, trails, roads, hills, and parks. Important values can be learned in cross country. Coach Jonathan Lee stated, “The runners learn endurance, perseverance, and courage to do the things they fear.”
Cross country is a team running sport. Although individuals run alone, schools are scored as a team. This year’s cross country theme is “Conquering Mountains.” Through this season, the team will not only conquer running mountains, but will learn to face and conquer huge mountains in life and not give up.
This year`s team consists of 20-26 boys and girls. “ Everyone here enjoys it,” stated Coach Johanna Fogallan. Junior Chris Sanine said, “Cross Country is cool. It’s my first year on the team.” Like Sanine, junior Kelsey Luoma is also excited. “I like it. I like to run. I am nervous but in the end it’s all worth it.” The whole team has a positive attitude toward each other and the coaches.
The cross country team works hard at practice everyday and some Saturdays from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Whenever they can, they go to the school pool and do aqua jogging. They run up and down the pool and do stroking under water. This increases their lung capacity.
Of all the meets they go to, the state meet is the biggest. It will be held on Saturday, November 26. The team is working hard to meet their goals. One of them is go as fast as you can for as long as you can. The team is ready to go and do their best in everything they do.

Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.

Warriors of the Waves
