Halloween
Not always what it is today...
by Allie Perry

Halloween is a night of fun and trick-or-treating, and it is just around the corner. Monsters, ghouls and superheroes will be running around their streets collecting treats from friendly neighbors. Parents will be checking their children’s candy for possibly opened wrappers. Teenagers and adults will be partying in spookily decorated houses. Creatively prepared food and more candy than a dentist would care to know about will be served.
But Halloween was not always fun. October 31 was the new year for Celtic Ireland, called Samhain, in the fifth century B.C. Samhain was said to have been the night that spirits, who had died during the previous year, came out to find a body to possess for the next year. Otherwise, they believed, they would have no hope for the afterlife. The villagers then dressed up in ghoulish costumes to scare the spirits away. Therefore, Halloween isn’t exactly a holy holiday to celebrate!
Some alternatives to celebrating Halloween are easy to find. Local churches often hold parties that are fun for all ages. There is a tradition at South Valley Christian Church called “trunk-or-treating.” Kids go from car to car in the church parking lot and get candy from the trunks of the cars. Some people are very creative and make decorative floats out of their cars. It is a safe alternative to receive candy without having to worry about crossing busy streets, and a fun way to celebrate Halloween. Also, The Church on the Hill has an annual festival with fun games and other activities.
Have a happy Halloween and stay safe!

Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.

As winds began to blow, reporters gave horrific forecasts of what was to come. Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 (intensity level out of 5), devastated much of the United States along the Gulf Coast.

Warriors of the Waves
The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. All this work helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year's team captains.
