Mentoring the Future of Valley Christian
by Blake Anderson

The two buildings sit majestically atop a grassy hill, monuments to achievement, excellence and virtue. A shining white cross stands above the football field, and flags snap in the wind that almost whispers of greatness. The scene is inspiring, impressive…and to some even intimidating. A ninth grader fresh out of a small junior high traces the winding road up to the mighty campus and lets his jaw drop slightly. To many, this might seem an exaggeration, but more than one of us remembers that first daunting sight of high school, of a campus teeming with hundreds upon hundreds of teenagers starting to drive, to dance, to glimpse adulthood on the horizon.

For this very reason, a group of dedicated upperclassmen have banded together so that Valley’s new freshmen need not know the same anxieties, that they might more swiftly overcome the obstacles of starting high school and forge ahead on a new and exciting path full of opportunity. Who are these noble-hearted paragons of compassion and warmth? They are the mentors.

After several meetings for training and bonding, the mentors met with Valley’s next generation at Fast Trak and had fun playing games and getting to know each other. Then the freshmen Bible classes took time out for small groups with the mentors, making new friends that will meet regularly throughout the year for fun, conversation and encouragement. Freshman Jacob Jones said that he liked the chance to talk with his freshmen friends. “One of the best things is spending time with other mentors,” Senior David Urbach remarked, also sure to mention that he is pleased with his group of freshmen “mentees.” The future is hopeful and exciting as mentors and freshmen look forward to a year full of fun and bonding.

Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.

Two monster storms, aptly called 100 year storms, savaged the Gulf Coast last month. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita swept in from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As winds began to blow, reporters gave horrific forecasts of what was to come. Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 (intensity level out of 5), devastated much of the United States along the Gulf Coast.

Warriors of the Waves
The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. An intense training regiment filled early mornings and late evenings with long hours practicing the fundamentals and conditioning. All this work helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year's team captains.
