Shakespeare,
Where Art Thou?
2005 Senior Oregon Shakespeare
Festival
by Chris McElhatton
For some people, spending eight hours
on a bus seems like some new type of torture. Everyone going on the
11th Annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival trip, though, saw things a
little differently.
Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from
the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon
Gameboy, poured out of people’s seats and into the aisle.
After what seemed for some only a short drive, the bus stopped for
lunch, and then it was back on the road, this time with card games,
word games, and movies providing some fun. Highlighting the drive
up was a special “modified” version of The Notebook, in which
there was a surprise ending where Valley senior Tiffany Makinster
asked senior Albino Garces to accompany her to the
upcoming Sadie dance.
With all the excitement of the bus ride, it was not surprising to
see smiling faces all about the hotel as students spilled out of the
bus and poured into the hotel pool. After a relaxing and exciting
first exploration of Oregon, with students swimming, watching movies,
and grabbing a last bite to eat at the adjacent gas stations, everyone
retired to their rooms to try to sleep a little before the next exciting
day.
Most students decided to sleep in until breakfast, but for a few,
such as Mike McCann, it seemed that waking up at
6.30 a.m. to go running by the river seemed a better option. Everyone
agreed, though, that they all must have breakfast, and so the dining
room was crowded with Valley students in the morning.
After a few bagels and morning devotions, it was back to the bus for
another short ride to the theatre. With activities ranging from prologues
(short conversations explaining the plays), to lunchtime, to a backstage
tour, their first full day in Oregon was jam-packed with activities
Then, it was time for the plays. The first of the three seen was Room
Service, a ridiculously funny show about trying to produce
a play. After laughing through the show, the students then ran all
about Ashland looking for food. Some chose to dine at a British Pub,
other small sidewalk cafes, and a few others just skipped dinner and
went straight to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
Feeling full of delicious food, everyone filed onto the buses once
again, this time for a trip to Southern Oregon University for a few
dance lessons and a class in stage combat. Learning how to throw fake
punches and psedo-slap people in the face, students can still be seen
around campus practicing their fighting skills.
With newly acquired combat skills, the students hit the town again,
roaming all over Ashland for food and fun. Whether it be in sheik
shops, retro stores, or even costume shops, everyone seemed to find
something that they liked. With such awesome actors, and incredible
plays like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Shakespeare’s
Twelfth Night, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival was simply
a great experience. For anyone interested in going their senior year…
do it. Ye shan’t regret it.

Two '100 Year' Storms
Devastate Gulf Coast
Two monster storms, aptly called 100 year storms, savaged the Gulf
Coast last month. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita swept in from the waters
of the Gulf of Mexico. As winds began to blow, reporters gave horrific
forecasts of what was to come. Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 (intensity
level out of 5), devastated much of the United States along the Gulf
Coast.

Warriors of the Waves
The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team
has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. An intense
training regiment filled early mornings and late evenings with long
hours practicing the fundamentals and conditioning. All this work
helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in
the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and
Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year's team captains.
