Successful Tournaments Prepare Girls Varsity Water Polo Team
by Brittany Brinkman

The girl’s varsity water polo team has started off their season strong. With many preseason wins the Varsity girls are ready for WCAL victories.
The Water Polo team has been practicing hard morning and night for their difficult season. In their preseason the team finished second in the Wilcox Tournament, and second in the Independence Tournament. Also they carried a 6-2 record, which set them up well for their league games. Captains Kelsi Okuda and Christina Shilling are leading the team well, along with their coach Laura Scott.
The varsity girls’ first league game was on Tuesday, September 27 at Valley Christian against Notre Dame. The team was behind 0-3 after the first quarter but they stuck together and claimed a victory. Coach Scott states that “the girls were slow to get of the gate, but once they settled down they could not be stopped”. The final score ended up being 8-5 with Valley on top. Their second league game occurred on September 29 against Archbishop Mitty. Prior to the game, Cathy Manthey, Director of Aquatics, said, “The team is anticipating their league game against the Mitty Monarchs and I am looking forward to seeing great leadership from the varsity captains.” Despite the incredible leadership by Okuda and Shilling the Warriors could not pull off a win against Mitty. The final score was 6-8, but for next time the girls are out to claim a victory against the Monarchs. The varsity water polo team is obviously on their way to rewarding season. More victories are expected from these Lady Warriors in the future.
