Varsity Football Leading Contender
by Kylie Gifford
The 2005 football season is underway,
and the Warriors appear to be proving once again that they have exactly
what it takes to be a leading contender in the WCAL.
At the homecoming game on October 1, Valley Christian faced the Mitty
Monarchs. For the first time, the Warriors executed their perfect
combination of unstoppable offense and unwavering defense under their
own bright stadium lights.
Early in the game, Dominique Hunsucker ran the ball
62 yards for the first Warrior touchdown. An interception by Brian
North set up Travis Nilmeyer’s one-yard
run for a second. Danté Perez threw a pass
to Mark Piethe and made an 18-yard run for two more
touchdowns for the Warriors.
Jake Walker and Tim Najar led the
defense in tackles and were key players throughout the game. Jeremy
Georges, J.J. Kulusich, and Joseph
Vasquez managed to break the Monarchs’ offensive line for
three sacks against Mitty. Overall, the amazing efforts of the Warriors’
defense managed to hold Mitty to less than 100 yards throughout the
course of the game.
Valley Christian ended the game with a score of 31-0. Head coach Mike
Machado, extremely pleased with the performance of the team,
remarked, “The Mitty game was a defining moment for us; we really
put it together, worked hard, and played a great game.”
The season kicked off on September 2 with a huge victory over the
San Benito Haybalers. Hunsucker began the scoring for the Warriors
with a six-yard run for a touchdown, followed by Mike Ginther’s
eight-yard touchdown run. Perez completed two out of only three passes
throughout the game for an astounding total of 132 yards; the completions
were caught by Piethe and North for two more touchdowns. Warrior defenders,
including defensive “player of the game” Mark Castelo,
held up their end by giving up less than 100 yards and only one touchdown.
The team’s work was reflected in the final score of 27-6, a more than
satisfying victory.
The Warriors continued their domination the next week on September
9 at the game against the Milpitas Trojans. Perez, at the top of his
game once again, threw passes to North and Julian Castaneda
to put a few points on the board for Valley. Two runs by Hunsucker
and one by Ginther resulted in three more Warrior touchdowns. On the
defensive end, Valley was unrelenting, managing to hold the Trojans
to a single touchdown. By the end of the game, the efforts of the
Warriors had earned them a huge 42-7 win.
At the following game on September 16, however, Valley had a tough
time pulling it together against Grant High School in Sacramento.
In the first half of the game, two Grant touchdowns were answered
with runs by Ginther and Hunsucker to maintain a very close score;
but unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to keep this up in the
second half. The defense, led once again by Castelo, was unable to
keep their opponent from scoring two more touchdowns, resulting in
a 14-27 loss for the Warriors. In response to the first loss of the
season, Machado explained, “We just didn’t finish against a good team.”
The Warriors traveled to Tracy on September 23 for the game against
West High School. When West managed to score the first touchdown of
the game, the Warriors doubled their efforts to even the score. Finally,
Valley found their answer as Hunsucker crossed into the opponent’s
end zone in the fourth quarter and Perez hit Piethe with a two-point
conversion pass for a one-point Warrior lead. Valley defense remained
solid throughout the game. AJ Alvarez led the defensive
line with two sacks and fourteen tackles. Despite the early lead taken
by West, the Warriors pulled together and were able to come up with
an 8-7 victory.
With a record of 4-1, Valley Christian continues to be a formidable
opponent in their league. As the season continues, hopes are high
for the Warriors as they go for yet another varsity football championship
in the WCAL.

Shakespeare, Where Art
Thou?
For some people, spending eight hours on a bus seems like some new
type of torture. Everyone going on the 11th Annual Oregon Shakespeare
Festival trip, though, saw things a little differently.
Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from
the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon
gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.

Two '100 Year' Storms
Devastate Gulf Coast
Two monster storms, aptly called 100 year storms, savaged the Gulf
Coast last month. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita swept in from the waters
of the Gulf of Mexico. As winds began to blow, reporters gave horrific
forecasts of what was to come. Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 (intensity
level out of 5), devastated much of the United States along the Gulf
Coast.

Warriors of the Waves
The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team
has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. An intense
training regiment filled early mornings and late evenings with long
hours practicing the fundamentals and conditioning. All this work
helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in
the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and
Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year's team captains.
