Varsity Girls Tennis: Servin' It Up
by Chris McElhatton

Tightly strung racquets, fuzzy green balls, and girls having a great time; these are the marks of the Valley Christian Varsity Girls Tennis team. Chalk full of talented players, the tennis team is doing well under their second year of leadership by Coach Gay McLaughlin.
Starting on September 13, the girls of the varsity tennis squad have had many games, both league and non-league. Highlighting their non-league was the match against Live Oak. On top of their game, the Lady Warriors literally smashed the Acorns, winning everything across the board. Ending with a 7-0 shutout, the girls celebrated their greatest victory this season by phoning in their scores to the San Jose Mercury News, who printed out the victories of seniors Keila Benjamin and Stephanie Neil. When asked about their successes, senior Brittany Brinkman said, “I was very excited to be able to win, and I was proud of the hard work that everyone put in.”
Such a great match like this shows how much the team continues to improve. Though losing to Sacred Heart, sophomore Alex Yaccarine went all the way to a third set, working hard until the very last bounce of the ball. Against Notre Dame Belmont, Erin Oswald and Annah Karakas both fought back against the Tigers, returning every ball sent their way. In spite of losing some tough matches, the girls have begun to fight their way back up the ranks, starting with their Live Oak match.
Finding themselves facing yet another tough team, the Lady Warriors squared off against the Presentation Panthers. In a tough match, the girls fought well, especially, once again, Oswald. With a strong line-up, the girls team is definitely fit for the challenging games ahead.

Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.

As winds began to blow, reporters gave horrific forecasts of what was to come. Hurricane Katrina, a category 4 (intensity level out of 5), devastated much of the United States along the Gulf Coast.

Warriors of the Waves
The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. An intense training regiment filled early mornings and late evenings with long hours practicing the fundamentals and conditioning. All this work helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year's team captains.
