Warriors of the Waves
Boys Varsity Water Polo team handles opponents
by Ryan Gray

The start of the new season for the Warriors Varsity Water Polo team has actually been going strong since the beginning of summer. An intense training regiment filled early mornings and late evenings with long hours practicing the fundamentals and conditioning. All this work helped the Water Polo team prepare for another grueling schedule in the West Catholic League. Senior Andrew Kikuta and Junior Jonathan Langdon are this year’s team captains. Langdon, who looks forward to a winning season with optimism, said, “We are a young team this year, but I am still expecting a lot out of them.” Second-year coach Caleb Carlson, who led the ’04 team to their first league victory last year, is returning with great expectations and enthusiasm. Former two time Olympian Steve Barnett is assisting head coach Carlson and will surely contribute a great deal to this young team.
During the Lincoln Tournament over the weekend of September 9th, the Warriors went 2-2. They played two matches on Friday and then an additional two on Saturday. Their first game against Salinas was looking very promising until leading scorer and team captain Kikuta was ejected on a controversial call early in the second period. From that point on, the Warriors struggled for a victory, but just were not able to pull it off. They went on to lose 11-9. Coach Carlson explained, “We are a young team and we made a lot of beginner mistakes. We just lost to a good, senior-heavy team.” Unfortunately the Warriors were unable to obtain a victory in their second game against Los Gatos and ended up losing 12-6. As a disappointing Friday came to an unsatisfying end, the Warriors were focused and anxious for the next day of competition.
As the sun rose so did the Warriors as they prepared for their first game against Willow Glen at 8am. Unlike the day before a resilient and undeterred Valley Christian Warriors came out firing making several goals in the first period. In the final game of the day the Warriors came out with a huge victory over RL Stevenson with a final score of 17-10.
Overall in the Lincoln Tournament team captain Kikuta led the team in scores with a total of 14 goals, followed by Matt Smith -11, Jared Clapham – 7, Abram Coetsee – 5, Aiden Lennihan – 2, Danny Young –1, Jonathan Grizzle –1, and Ryan Gray – 1. Although the Warriors only went 2-2 in this tournament coach Carlson stated that he “sees a lot of promise for this year.”

Shakespeare, Where Art Thou?
For some people, spending eight hours on a bus seems like some new type of torture. Everyone going on the 11th Annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival trip, though, saw things a little differently.
Coming prepared, all the students had some sort of diversion from the drive; the neon glow of iPods, cell phones, and even a Pokémon gameboy, poured out of people's seats and into the aisle.
