Definitely Not of This World
by Elizabeth Fleming

When walking into the new C28 clothing store at Oakridge Mall, you get this feeling that you’re about to experience something totally different.  At first glance, the shop seems to blend in with the rest of the mall.  Yes, the walls are filled with the latest fashions that permeate throughout our culture, and the music playing in the background is just as loud and catchy as all the other mainstream stores; but there’s something else captivating about the atmosphere of the place. Likely, it’s the cheerful, friendly attitudes of the employees that seem to draw you in.  Perhaps it’s the inviting window displays that show off the ultra-trendy, but modest style of clothing that appeals to teenagers and dress codes alike.  With closer inspection, you come to realize that there is, in fact, something very unique about C28.

First opened in April 2001 in Riverside, California, this franchise is the first youth-oriented Christian mainstream clothing store.  They opened their first store in northern California at Oakridge Mall during the summer, and expect a mid-to-late September opening for their second store at Valley Fair.  With 7 (soon-to-be 8) stores open throughout California, C28 represents a new movement, which is spreading God’s Word among youth.  In fact, the store donates a portion of its profits to youth organizations throughout America.  The company’s name is derived from their message, which is Colossians 2:8:  “See to it that no one take you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”

Their brand, Not of This World, sells an array of clothes and accessories that reflects their positive message.  Many of their screen tees display Christian messages in an artistic and fashionable manner.  Their collections of tees, along with their line of hoodies, are some of their most popular sellers.  The store hopes that through these messages, God’s Word will reach and inspire numerous people to seek salvation through Jesus Christ.  So what is it, exactly, that makes C28 so different from every other store at the mall?  “We, as people, genuinely care about the people who come here.  We take the time to stop and talk to them and get to know our customers.  Our mission is the grace, truth, and love of Christ,” said Oakridge store manager, Josh Jacobs.  One thing is certain; with their impeccable designs and positive messages, C28 is a welcome breath of fresh air in the youth fashion industry.
