Wham! That’s the signature sound of Lady Warriors volleyball as their powerful front row once again spikes the ball down into the face of their opponents. This year’s J.V. team is composed of eleven players. These eight sophomores and three freshmen are all now completely unified and competing toward one common goal: a winning season. They have together endured two grueling weeks of tryouts and now their relationship goes beyond just being teammates. They have become a family who cares about each other on and off the court. “Although this year’s team is not as experienced as it has been in the past,” sophomore Captain
Kaylan Whitaker commented, “I don’t think that will hinder our performance as we grow together and become a stronger team.” Since this year’s J.V. team is considered to be very young, the Lady Warriors will have a chance to prove their talent against older and more experienced teams. Although, after watching this team play, it does not seem like age is going to be very much of an issue.
On September 5, the team played their first match against Leigh High School. With the help of a strong serve receive line-up and a consistent offense, they pulled out a win in three games.
They went on to win again on September 7 against Milpitas High School. In this match, the Lady Warriors completely dominated their opponents and finished quickly in two games. Efficient passing allowed them to run dynamic front row attacks, leading to their victory.
After a long drive to San Benito High School on September 12, the girls once again came out on top. Strong serving paralyzed their opponents and they won in two short games.
At the team’s home opener on September 14, the Lady Warriors continued their undefeated streak. They defeated Mt. Pleasant High School in two games. Through consistent passing and aggressive kills, they established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
Even through they did not even have school on September 18, the girls once again showed up ready to play. In their home gym, they triumphed over Westmont High School swiftly in two games. Once again, strong serving and intense defense led their victory.
Furthermore, their coach Jess Torres commented that his expectations for this year’s team are for them “to play competitively in league and to improve together as a team throughout the season.” So far, the J.V. Lady Warriors seem to be on the right track and heading towards a very successful season.
