"Pump, Pump, Pump It Up!" Spreading Autumn Cheer at the Football Games
by Kylie Gifford

Though the Valley Christian cheer squad has made several changes in its agenda this year, the girls are out on the track every weekend ready to pump up Warrior fans.

Under the direction of coaches Vanessa Lal and Robin Warnock, both the J.V. and varsity squads have proven their dedication by spending their afternoons learning and perfecting routines. Much hard work and preparation goes into preparing for each week’s game. The cheer program, advised by Mrs. Laurie Tamura, has undergone several changes from previous years. In an effort to promote unity among the cheerleaders, Tamura and the coaches decided against choosing team captains. Though this was hard to adjust to at first, especially for the girls who have been on the team for several years, it has allowed every member of the team a chance to step up and be a leader.

In addition to this, the JV and Varsity squads are spending more time working together than they have in previous years. Because each level is led by both coaches together, the girls are able to learn more complex routines which incorporate complicated stunts.

Finally, the cheerleading season has been cut a bit short this year, as the girls will not be cheering during basketball season as in previous years. This gives members of the squad a chance to participate in other spring sports, which they have not been able to do in the past. With football season already in progress and homecoming rapidly approaching, the cheerleaders are hard at work doing their best to support the football players and keep up VC spirit. The girls are looking forward to the duration of the season with much excitement.
