Valley Christian ASB: "What Are You For?"
by Victoria Bergland

On the eve of July 28, 2006, Valley Christian High School ASB officers gathered together at the beautiful Krueger home in Watsonville, California. The main topic of the night was to decide on the 2006-2007 school year's theme. many ideas went around, while ASB Music Coordinator Danielle Dupre was deep in thought. Finally, she spoke up. Her idea seemed to fit perfectly with ASB's purpose of the year, and the decision was made: "What are you for?" was going to be the theme.

ASB President Gregg Cates explained that this particular question answers a person's reason for living and why he lives the way that he does. The verse that was chosen by ASB is 1 Peter 3:15 which states, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone that you have." It relates to the theme by showing that a person should always be prepared to explain what they are for and why. It is very important to make a decision, but the most vital part is the actions that follow.

"This theme has challenged me to encourage others, as well as myself, to grow in our walk with God. Because, in a walk with God, you are continually moving in a specific direction, and that direction is toward God, Himself," explained Gregg. Mr. Cates realized that he too, was not always walking toward God, but his goal is to gradually gain a greater relationship with Christ. Not ashamed in any way, Cates has his answer set when someone comes up and asks what he is for, and that is to try and live a life displaying Christ's love, while being aware of the fact that he always has something to grow toward, and that will forever be a challenge.

This test is not only being given to Gregg Cates and ASB, but to the entire student body. As a whole, Valley Christian students will be able to take the theme to heart, in order to be able to question and grow in their relationship with God and others. Now, what are you for?
